Although the entrance age varies in individual schools, a child can usually enter the Montessori classroom at the age of three.  They will begin the simplest exercise based on activities which all children will enjoy.

The equipment which they use at three or four will help them to develop the concentration, coordination and working habits necessary for the more advanced exercises they will perform at five and six.

The entire program of learning is purposefully structured.  Therefore, optimum results cannot be expected either for a child who misses the early years of the cycle, or for one who is withdrawn before they finish the Montessori program.

Parents should understand that Montessori preschool is neither a baby-sitting service nor a play school that prepares a child for traditional kindergarten.  Rather, it is a unique cycle of learning designed to take advantage of the child's sensitive years between three and six, when they absorb information from an enriched environment.

A child who acquires the basic skills of reading and arithmetic in this natural way has the advantage of beginning their education without drudgery, boredom or discouragement.  By pursuing their individual interests in a Montessori classroom, they gain an early appreciation for learning-the key to the child becoming a truly educated person.

Preschool enrichment activities include French, Spanish, Italian, Computers, Yoga, Creative Movement, Music, Art, and Gardening

                                  Elementary Philosophy and Activities

From ages 6 to 9 the Casa dei Bambini Montessori student builds a new and challenging world on the foundation laid during primary school.  The children are ready to move from the facts they so readily accepted earlier to questions.  Those questions then lead to further research, written work, and artistic expression.

The goal now is to set the habit of lifelong learning.  In this time children begin to explore the Five Great Lessons that are at the heart of Montessori education.  The lessons are The Story of the Creation of the Universe; The Coming of Life; The Story of Humans; the Story of Language, and the Story of Numbers
  • Within the structure of these large topics, all traditional subjects are covered:  math, sciences, languages, history, culture, geography, music and art.  The Great Lessons themselves offer an opportunity for children to see that all areas of learning are interrelated, and, more important, that humans in general, and they in particular live in a complex and wonderful universe.
